Course summary

The FdA Counselling is taught at East Durham College(opens in new tab) and upon successful completion, you’ll earn a Foundation Degree in Counselling accredited by the University of Sunderland.

With a strong practical focus, this course helps you reflect on your workplace experiences and apply your learning in real-world settings. The course meets the growing demand for counsellors in the health sector, voluntary and community services, and private practice. The increasing awareness of the benefits of talking therapies has created more opportunities for qualified professionals.

After completion, you can 'top-up' to a full honours degree by studying for one more year at Sunderland, deepening your knowledge and expanding your career options.

Counselling skills are in high demand, with career paths including educational counselling, forensic counselling, and clinical counselling. These roles allow you to work with mental health, addiction, and social adjustment issues. Additionally, counselling skills are valuable in fields like social work, HR, public services, and marketing.
