As part of International Women’s Day 2020, University of Sunderland Chancellor and multiplatinum singer Emeli Sandé has been reflecting on her teenage years.
The songwriter, who became the University’s Chancellor last summer, has spoken about the advice she would have given her teenage self now that she looks back.
Emeli, who was talking during a visit to the University this week, said: “I would tell myself to really research the meaning of feminism.
“It’s a word and term that came into my life only in the past five or six years and I think if I had understood the challenges women face, and had faced for centuries, it would have given me more of an edge as a teenager.”
She added: “I would also like to try to give myself the strength to move forward and believe in my ideas.
“It is easier said than done but I would like to go back and instil more confidence in my teenage self.”
