Waste management and pollution prevention

We have a Total Waste Management contract which ensures that as much waste as possible is recycled, and that all waste is disposed of through registered carriers.

The University segregates waste internally and stores general waste and recycling centrally on each campus and in student accommodation prior to collection.

Over the years, efforts to reduce the amounts of waste generated have been successful. and with an improvement in digital services means the amount of paper waste has significantly reduced. Efforts to recycle as many waste streams as possible through waste segregation practices on site means that more waste is recycled than disposed as energy from waste.

Beach clean up

To help with reducing waste in our city, students got together at Roker Beach, near Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter's, to collect rubbish that had been left by members of the public.

What happens to my recycling?

Recycling is very important to us: we are committed to reducing the waste we produce and recycle where we can. We have improved our recycling facilities over the years and our bins are segregated to collect mixed paper, cans and tins, plastics and general waste. We also offer glass and battery recycling.

Materials that can’t be recycled are sent to an energy from waste (EFW) facility so that electricity and heat can be recovered.

Around our teaching buildings, offices and catering outlets you will see our segregated recycling bins.

Please help us improve by recycling as much as you can.
