Lecturer in Sustainable Business

I began my career working as a Compliance Consultant and Auditor in the financial services industry, focusing on pensions and life assurance provision. However, I returned to university to retrain for a career in teaching and studied Environmental Sustainability (MA), Carbon Management (MSc), and then completed my PhD titled Embedding Education for Sustainable Development in the Curriculum in Scotland's Colleges: An Analysis, which I completed in 2016, all at the University of Glasgow.

While studying I was also employed in education, at Dumfries and Galloway College and on various Scottish Government funded projects, as a Sustainability Practitioner to embed sustainability within the curriculum in colleges across Scotland. This role was also combined with being the Climate Change Officer at Dumfries and Galloway College to report on their carbon emissions.

I have been employed as the Student Engagement Adviser at Dumfries and Galloway College to work with, train, and manage elected student representation through the Student Association and Class Representative systems.

Teaching and supervision

I am currently module leader for Managing Sustainability and Operational Excellence (PGBM133) on MSc International Business Management.

I also teach the undergraduate module Leading and Implementing Change (MGT303) on BA (Hons) Business and Management.

I am a supervisor for dissertation students on both MSc International Business Management and MBA Master of Business Administration.

Research interests for potential research students

  • Education for sustainable development
  • Embedding sustainability in business and transitioning to sustainable business practices
  • Student engagement and the student voice

Research

My main research interests are twofold, first, any element of sustainability within education and the curriculum. This includes, but is not limited to, a paradigm shift to a new business model with sustainability at its core, carbon reduction and management, and the circular economy.

My second research area of interest is student engagement and the student voice along with widening access and participation. I further believe that sustainability education is an important tool for student engagement, both within the classroom and also across campus and community projects which makes classroom learning and teaching visible to a wider audience.
