Senior Lecturer in Fashion Design and Promotion

I graduated from Northumbria University with a BA (Hons) in Fashion Marketing. I then went on to work as a successful men’s and boys sportswear designer for high profile companies including Reebok, Hi-Tec, Matalan, Umbro & Marks and Spencer.

I've worked as a lecturer on the BA Hons in Fashion Design and Promotion at the University since January 2014. Before coming to Sunderland, I was Course Leader of the highly rated Extended Diploma in Fashion and Clothing at CCAD in Middlesbrough. I'm extremely enthusiastic when it comes to passing on my experience of fashion design and illustration, especially using the computer packages, Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.

I continue to work freelance and commission illustrations for a variety of different clients. After seeing my work on an artists’ website, Martin Dawber contacted me and asked to include a number of my illustrations in his best selling book 'The Big Book of Fashion Illustration'.

In June 2018, I saw my first book published to critical acclaim. The Call of the Sea is a fully-illustrated 288 page hardback book which depicts the shipbuilding heritage of Sunderland through to the Tall Ships Race of 2018. It also features my own story of being a sail trainee on the race. The book has been shortlisted for the Mountbatten Award for Best Book by the Maritime Foundation and a copy was presented to the Princess Royal when she visited Sunderland in July 2018. I like to create beautiful, realistic images with an element of magic to them!

Teaching and supervision

I teach the following across all three years of the degree BA (Hons) Fashion Design and Promotion:

  • Fashion design
  • Illustration
  • Marketing/promotion
  • Graphics
  • CAD
  • Adobe Creative Suite

I am also External Assessor for Manchester Metropolitan University.

Research interests for potential research students

I'm particularly interested in researching the potential of digital illustration especially Adobe Illustrator. I wrote my first book in early 2018 and focused on drawing beautiful images using this digital technique.

Research

I wrote, illustrated and designed my first book in early 2018 based on the Tall Ships Race coming to Sunderland in 2018. The 288-page hardback book covers 3 different chapters -1: Shipbuilding on the Wear which includes my own digital drawings and rarely seen photos from the Tyne and Wear Archives; 2: Tall Ships with images of lots of different Tall Ships across the years and finally, 3: The Tall Ships Race (and the life of a sail trainee) which will include my own story and the experiences of other trainees and ship captains alongside my own photos and drawings.
