Biosciences

My research interests span biological systems impacting human metabolism. I am based in the School of Nursing and Health Sciences, and hold honorary titles at the Wellcome-MRC Institute of Metabolic Science (University of Cambridge), the Leeds Institute for Metabolic and Cardiovascular Medicine (University of Leeds), and Zhejiang Gongshang University.

My work has developed effective self-management strategies for the avoidance of exercise-induced hypoglycaemia and late post-prandial hyperglycaemia which informed the landmark Exercise Management in Type 1 Diabetes Consensus Statement, and the American Diabetes Association Position Statement for Physical Activity and Exercise.

Teaching and supervision

Research interests for potential research students

We periodically have funded PhD positions available and are always looking for bright and motivated candidates for PhD research. If you have a project idea, or would like to study for a PhD in my laboratory, we welcome you to get in touch.

Self-funding PhD applicants, or those with scholarships from their home institutes and governments are also welcome to apply. Prospective PhD students are encouraged to contact me, with a CV and a cover letter, explaining their motivations for applying, and for information about potential projects. An interest and experience in metabolism, diabetes and/or cardiovascular disease, and dietary and/or clinical intervention is beneficial.

In the future we will be exploring the potential for therapeutic dietary or pharmacological intervention in patients with double diabetes to build on our recent observations and hypotheses.

In my laboratory you will learn a range of cell and molecular biology tools and/or clinical techniques to investigate mechanisms and treatment pathways, and how cardiovascular and metabolic biology can be manipulated by components derived from, or modulated by diet and physical activity.

Currently available projects

New nutritional strategies to modulate postprandial cardiometabolic risk in metabolic disease.

Large prospective cohort studies have demonstrated that fasting and postprandial blood lipid levels (lipaemia) are strongly associated with cardiovascular (CVD) risk. Although fasting lipaemia is indicative of the cumulative effects of composite diets and metabolic activity, they do not accurately reflect the impact of individual foods or meals consumed during the day.

Humans exist mostly in the non-fasting state, reflecting our habitual physiological status in which sudden influxes of energy and nutrients increase metabolic allostatic loading. Westernised dietary patterns promote a lipotoxic state involving the activation of various inflammatory and thrombotic pathways which promote vascular dysfunction and play an important role in the pathogenesis of CVD. In every day diet, lipids of various molecular species are incorporated in food products under different physiochemical structures which influence the duration and intensity of postprandial lipaemia. It is important to determine the factors which influence the cardiometabolic impact of food formulations in high-risk populations.

In this research group, we examine how modulating the composition of meals and the matrix of individual foods can optimise targeted nutritional strategies for the clinical and nutritional management of metabolic disease. The student will be part of a multidisciplinary team which has extensive experience in nutritional interventions and the clinical management of cardiovascular and metabolic disease.

Suitable candidates will demonstrate a strong background in molecular/cellular biology and clinical nutrition. Interested applicants should contact myself and preview other available projects prior to making a formal application.

This project is available to self-funded and/or sponsored students; applicants with sufficient funding must still undergo formal interview prior to acceptance in order to demonstrate scientific aptitude and English language capability. We welcome applications from all suitably-qualified candidates, but UK black and minority ethnic (BAME) researchers are currently under-represented in our postgraduate research community, and we would therefore particularly encourage applications from UK BAME candidates.

Research

I lead a research group of 11 consisting of two clinical research fellows, three research nurses, and six PhD students. The group takes a multidisciplinary approach to understanding the role of nutrition and exercise in the prevention and management of metabolic and cardiovascular disease from the molecular to the whole-body level. My research programmes cover three interlinked areas: cardiometabolic health, postprandial handling in response to diet and exercise, and interpersonal variation in intervention response. The group is investigating which factors influence the cardiometabolic impact of food and the food matrix, and how modulating the composition of food, diet, and physical activity patterns can optimise targeted strategies to improve the management of diabetes and improve outcome including reducing the risk of complications.

My work has been generously supported by the NIHR, BHF, Diabetes UK, Nutricia Research Foundation, and LiverNorth, in addition to industry sponsorship for investigator-led research including Bristol-Myers Squibb, AbbVie, Dexcom, Medtronic, and Abbott.

I have published my work regularly and consistently in world-leading journals including Diabetes Care, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Cardiovascular Diabetology, and the Journal of the American Heart Association.
