Associate Head of the School of Nursing and Health Sciences (Blended Learning, MNurse and Midwifery)

I am a registered nurse (Adult) and veteran (PMRAFNS) and I have used this experience to develop leadership skills which I employ as the Associate Head of the School of Nursing and Health Sciences. In this role, I am responsible for the delivery of the BSc (Hons) Adult Nursing (Blended), MNurse (Adult) and BSc (Hons) Midwifery Practice. The blended learning programme (nursing) is only one of seven flexible nursing programmes in England. It's commissioned by Health Education England to expand the number of registered nurses in the NHS.

In addition to the Associate Head of School role, I am also the University’s Armed Forces Champion and Chair of the Veterans and Reservists Network. I take these roles very seriously and strive to achieve the requirements of the University’s Gold Armed Forces Covenant.

My teaching interests include health law, and ethics and women’s health.

Research

I have various research interests, most relating to pedagogical practice and medical ethics.

  • Nurse education
  • Health law and ethics
  • Professional practice
  • Leadership and management

I qualified as a nurse in 1995 and worked at Papworth Hospital in Respiratory Medicine and Cardiac Research. On completion of my degree, I joined the Royal Air Force as a Nursing Officer, working in Orthopaedics and Medical Admissions until transferring into nurse education within a Tri-Service environment.

After a successful career in the RAF, I was employed by Swansea University as a Senior Lecturer, undertaking many roles and developing my skills in education. In June 2016, I returned to my hometown and joined the University of Sunderland as the Programme Leader for the new BSc (Hons) Adult Nursing Practice. I led this course to becoming 5th in The Guardian University league tables 2018 and becoming a finalist in the Student Nursing Times Awards in 2017 and 2018.

I am now the Team Leader for Postgrad Nursing, WBL/CPD/CWD and Apprenticeships and have a responsibility to ensure all of our adult nursing courses are delivered to a high standard.
