Senior Lecturer and Programme Lead ECP

I qualified as a first-level Mental Health Nurse in 1994 and completed an ENB 998 the following year. I qualified as an Adult Nurse in 2000 and moved into higher education in 2020.

I am the Programme Leader for Enhanced Clinical Practice (PgCert) and I also teach several short courses for continuing professional development such as the Professional Nurse Advocate course.

In my clinical role as a mental health nurse, I have worked in tertiary care in acute admissions and secondary care in psychosis and non-psychosis pathways in community teams, rehabilitation, addiction services, and early intervention in psychosis. In my clinical role as an Adult Nurse, I have worked in endoscopy and in primary care leading on management of post-MI and TIA care in the community.

I have an undergraduate degree in Biological Anthropology from Durham University, a diploma in mental health nursing from Teesside University, a diploma in adult nursing from Middlesex University, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education from University of Sunderland.

I am currently studying MSc in Education where my focus is on mentoring practices in higher education institutions to support the transition of newly appointed lecturers.

Teaching and supervision

I am the Programme Leader for Enhanced Clinical Practice (PgCert), which is delivered as an apprenticeship. I also teach across post-registration courses, where my focus is on education, leadership, and supervision in clinical practice and I also supervise a number of postgraduate dissertations.

I have a keen interest in reflective practice, health literacy, treatment engagement, communication skills, and gendered norms in leadership.

Research interests for potential research students

My current MSc focuses on contracting structure, content, and process of mentorship in higher education institutions to facilitate the transition of newly appointed lecturers from professional practice to academic practice. This includes how mentoring contracts can support the development of technical competence and enculturation to an organisation.
