Head of the Helen McArdle Nursing and Care Research Institute, Associate Professor, Health Services Research

I am the Head of the Helen McArdle Nursing and Care Research Institute where I lead the development of Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health (NMAHP) clinical research capacity and capability within the University, and with our partners in health and social care settings. The Institute has five themes of Health Services Research, Nursing, Out of Hospital Care, Bariatric Surgical Care and Military and Veteran Health and Wellbeing.

I am proud to be the Veteran's Champion for the University as part of our commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant.

I am one of the NMAHP Strategic Research Leads for the NIHR North East and North Cumbria Clinical Research Network, working with South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, and Gateshead Health NHS Trust. Within community settings, I am the NMAHP Strategic Research Lead for Sunderland Clinical Commissioning Group and South Tyneside Clinical Commissioning Group to concurrently build NMAHP research in the community and health and social care settings. I am Vice-Chair of both CCGs' Research and Evidence Committee.

I have held an embedded research post in the Bariatric Surgical Unit in the Directorate of General Surgery at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust for the last eight years, where I lead research into patient experience, sexual and reproductive health, the role of healthcare professionals within multi-disciplinary teams, and social media and technology for bariatric patient support. I have research collaborations with the Department of Radiology where we have studies in workforce development, patient safety and cancer awareness.

I am the Speciality Group Lead, Health Services Research for the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) North East and North Cumbria Clinical Research Network, supporting the delivery of studies in this discipline.

I work collaboratively to ensure that the knowledge gained from the research informs practice and decision-making, whilst feeding back into the healthcare curriculum in the School of Nursing and Health Sciences to ensure our students have the benefit of real world research during their studies at the University of Sunderland.
