Senior Lecturer in Education

I am Programme Leader for PGCE Geography and module leader for several secondary modules.

I graduated in 1994 from Newcastle University with a BSc in Geography, and then completed my PGCE in Geography Education. I have over 20 years of teaching experience in schools across the North East and Essex teaching Geography at key stages 3, 4 and 5 and History at KS3 and 4. I now lead the PGCE Geography course and am passionate about training the next generation of geography teachers so they can continue to inspire students to study our amazing world.

I am an experienced mentor with a history of supporting and training PGCE students on their school based placements, many of whom are now successful teachers and mentors today. I was a learning coach for 15 years working with teachers of all levels of experience to enhance their teaching. I am also a GCSE and A level examiner and bring this experience to the course.

I am passionate about learning outside of the classroom and conducting fieldwork, thinking critically, teaching creatively and looking for solutions to address the challenges the planet faces.

Teaching and supervision

I teach on PGCE Geography. I am module leader for the secondary modules: EDP 381, EDP384, EDP382, EDP383 and EDM189.

I also lecture on the National Curriculum, Theories of Learning, Adaptive Teaching, Lesson Planning, Metacognition and Learning Outside the Classroom on EDPM01 and EPDM97.

My research has focused on 'Thinking Skills' in geography, questioning and metacognition. As an original member of the Thinking Through Geography Team, I have contributed to the publications: "Thinking Through Geography" (awarded a gold certificate by the Geographical Association), and "More Thinking through Geography" (awarded a Silver award by the Geographical Association). As a teacher I was involved in practitioner research.
