Senior Lecturer in Primary Education

I joined the University in 2020 as a Senior Lecturer in Primary Education. I studied for a PGCE in 2008 and followed this with a Masters in Education which I completed part-time during the first two years of my teaching career.

I have 11 years of experience working as a teacher; from EYFS to Year 6 in different schools both in London and across the north east. I have mentored many trainee teachers and NQTs in schools and have enjoyed being able to develop this further by supporting students at University of Sunderland.

While working in schools, I was a middle leader and coordinated mathematics across all year groups. I am passionate about the teaching and learning of mathematics for children but also for the teachers delivering this and I particularly enjoy helping others to gain confidence and skills in this subject. I also have an interest in the teaching of foundation subjects, stemming from my undergraduate degree in geography.

I enjoy using my experience and support to enable trainees to become excellent teachers.

Teaching and supervision

I am a Senior Lecturer teaching on BA (Hons) Primary Education with QTSPGCE Primary Education, BA (Hons) Primary Education with SEND, and BA (Hons) Education Studies. I undertake teaching, marking, and supporting students with their school experience modules. I am currently module leader for Education Studies Integrated Foundation Year module Current Issues in Education.

I am maths and geography lead for the primary team and a personal academic tutor for Year 1 BA with SEND trainees. Within the primary team, I deliver many of the maths and geography sessions, alongside some professional learning sessions focusing on learning styles and research methods.

Research

My masters research was based on the effects of streaming and setting in mathematics on the academic outcomes and also self-efficacy of students within these settings.

As well as supervising dissertation students and supporting students on the MA modules of the PGCE courses, I am also actively involved in research myself and keep up to date with current issues in education. I have a research interest in the discovery-led model of education in the development of skills and knowledge and hope to develop this further in the future.

I am actively involved in the North East Maths Hub for ITT as well as the regional branch of the Geographical Association.
