Senior Lecturer/Programme Leader in Post Compulsory Education and Training

I am a Senior Lecturer and full time Programme Leader in the PCET team in the School of Education. I joined the University in 2019 following 18 years working in local Further Education (FE) colleges. I've held many roles during this time in a wide variety of contexts ranging from teaching, support and management, in 14-16 education, maths and engineering related subjects.

My final role in FE was Head of Maths having previously occupied roles such Advanced Practitioner (in Engineering), Teaching and Learning Coach and Curriculum Manager for the Engagement Team.

Teaching and supervision

I teach on the Post Compulsory Education and Training PGCE and I am Programme Leader for the full-time PCET option. I also lead the Maths Pathway, Computing Pathway and Enhanced Mentoring (Durham Sixth Form Centre and Hartlepool Sixth Form).

Research interests for potential research students

  • The experiences of maths teachers
  • Digital teaching and learning
  • Vocational and experiential learning

Research

I have a passion for engaging with the most reluctant learners as evidenced in my creation of ‘The Real Project’; an initiative to engage young people in vocationally relevant subjects and evaluated via a BA (Hons) in Education (2010).

In 2015, I retrained as a FE maths teacher via a level 7 in Maths Pedagogy. I am committed to my own professional development, this has enabled me to study a wide variety of courses at higher level including engineering, maths, leadership and management, education and digital technology related subjects. These topic areas have been fundamental to both my professional interests and my academic research.

My current (MPhil) research project is focused on the development of maths teachers with a current working title of...The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of teaching Maths in Further Education. I am hoping to progress with this work to a PhD.
