What is Dark Tourism? Join Ian Morton, Senior Lecturer in Tourism and Events, and David Martin, Lecturer in Psychology, as they give an introductory overview of what dark tourism is, and isn’t, as they cover some key definitions, examples, and stories.
The session will cover some of the misconceptions and misunderstandings of dark tourism, looking into current examples and how it's changed over the years. We'll consider how we can best engage with dark tourism, both from the supply, such as how businesses and organisations advertise, and demand, exploring the expectations people have as tourists and visitors, how we behave in these places, and what draws people in.
Topics within this session will include Stone's spectrum and the seven types of dark tourism. We'll discuss the different factors that determine the darkness of a location and the motivation to visit these sites. Also, we'll explore what is appropriate, for example, ice-cream trucks at Auschwitz and the bear bin at the Zeppelinfeld.
This talk will be recorded and circulated. Cameras and microphones will be disabled, however this will be an interactive session and you'll be asked to engage in the chat and vote in polls. The session will end with a Q and A.
