Our Integrated Foundation programme will provide you with a springboard onto a vocationally-relevant degree course which will enhance your career prospects. You will enrol on a 4-year programme (which has its own dedicated UCAS code) made up of a Foundation Year and a seamless transition to a 3-year BSc or BA degree course. The flexible entry requirements make it perfect if you have just missed out on the right grades, or if you are looking to explore a new subject to study or thinking about returning to education.
The Foundation Year in Health Sciences and Wellbeing prepares you for your chosen degree, developing core academic skills and subject knowledge in a supportive and stimulating learning environment. Once you have successfully completed your Foundation Year you will progress automatically onto your chosen degree course.

Foundation Year Content
The Health Sciences and Wellbeing Integrated Foundation Year includes 4 modules:
- Foundations of Health Sciences and Wellbeing Module (40 credits)
- Practical Numeracy Skills Module (20 credits)
This module explores fundamental concepts and principles to support successful study in programmes related to Health Sciences and Wellbeing. One of the biggest challenges facing modern society is the mental and physical health of its members. On this module, you will address some of the big current issues in relation to health and wellbeing, applying multiple perspectives from, for example, psychology, public health and sport and exercise. You will, for example gain an understanding of factors underlying body image issues, the impact of social media on mental health, the extent to which happiness can be improved in individuals and societies, and the role of behaviour change approaches in relation to challenges such as the obesity crisis.
There is a focus is on small group teaching to provide a comprehensive explanation of key topics. Learning is reinforced through interactive activities with your peers in seminars and workshops and online via our dedicated virtual learning environment.
Your progress will be assessed every step of the way with the opportunity for regular reviews of your learning. At the end of the module you will be required to produce work for assessment which includes a Blog, a practical report and a health promotion artefact.

This module will give you confidence in dealing with the essential numeracy skills required for your degree subject. The module is designed to be highly relevant and practical for your studies at university and career. You will be introduced to essential maths concepts, applied in ways relevant to your chosen degree subject and useful in general life (such as personal finance and budget management). You learn through practical tasks, individually and in groups, with regular feedback and support from tutors supported by our dedicated Virtual Learning Environment. This approach provides opportunities for regular reviews of your learning. The assessment for this module is a portfolio of some of the work you will undertake during the module.
- Foundation Project Module (20 Credits)
- Succeeding at University and Beyond (40 Credits)
The Foundation Project offers you an exciting opportunity to study a topic related to your chosen degree in more depth. In completing your project you will develop subject knowledge as well as the skills and attributes valued by employers, including project management, self-management, independent working and communication skills. You will be fully supported and guided throughout the module and your progress reviewed via meetings with your tutor. Your assessment topic will align closely with your degree programme and may include a report, a review paper or a practical project.
Everyone can get better at learning and everyone can learn to high levels. This module will help you understand how to get the most out of your course, engage with your chosen subject and succeed.
It will help you build confidence, understand what is expected of you when studying for a degree and develop self-awareness about the individual way you learn. You will develop the knowledge, skills and attributes to ensure you succeed in your academic journey. This includes learning more about how to read and think critically, write essays, give presentations and use digital technologies productively. You will be able to improve your understanding of what counts as good academic enquiry and research, working with the experienced academic researchers at the University.
You will also begin to identify and assess your skills and motivation for employment, exploring the vast array of challenging and rewarding career pathways that your chosen degree can offer. You will be supported by specialist advisers to identify areas for development so that you have the maximum opportunity to secure the skills required by recruiters when you graduate.
