Supporting your student during results day and clearing

Here are some practical tips to help you support your student, ensuring they stay calm, confident, and ready to take their next steps.

Results day can be a pivotal moment for students and their supporters. Whether your student secures their expected results or needs to explore alternative options through Clearing, your guidance can make a significant difference.

1. Understand the process

  • Results confirmation: On results day, students can check the UCAS Hub from 8am to see if their university place has been confirmed.
  • Clearing eligibility: If they haven't met the conditions of their offers, they may enter Clearing to find available courses.
  • University contact: Encourage them to contact their first-choice university, as some may still offer places despite missed grades

2. Prepare in advance

Research options: Before results day, explore potential courses and universities that align with your student's interests and qualifications.

  • Familiarise yourself with Clearing: Understand the Clearing process, terminology, and timelines by reviewing resources on the UCAS website
  • Consider alternatives: Look into courses with lower entry requirements or integrated foundation years as viable options

3. Organise essential information

Ensure your student has the following ready:

  • UCAS ID number
  • A Level and GCSE results, including exam boards
  • A charged phone and access to a computer or tablet
  • A list of Clearing hotline numbers for prospective universities
  • Pen and paper for note-taking

4. Manage the day effectively

  • Stay rested: Encourage a good night's sleep before results day to ensure alertness.
  • Allocate time: Be prepared to spend the day assisting with calls, researching options, and possibly attending university open days.
  • Maintain positivity: Approach the day with an open mind, reassuring your student that multiple pathways can lead to success

5. Explore university support

The University of Sunderland offers resources and events to assist during this period:

  • Clearing helpline: Contact 0191 515 3000 for guidance
  • Clearing drop-in events: Attend sessions on Thursday 15 and Friday 16 August
  • Open Day: Visit on Saturday 17 August to explore campus and course offerings

Good luck!

By staying informed and supportive, you can help your student navigate results day and Clearing with confidence, ensuring they find the best path for them. We wish you the best of luck and hope to be welcoming your student to the University of Sunderland in September.
