Congratulations to Joseph Seyi Sunday, Zahra Batool, and Chinyere Ihejieto for recently winning the local University of Sunderland competition; and for being chosen to represent the University in two other presentation skills competitions.

Judge at the local and regional competition, Dr Derek Watson, said: “You know a good presenter when they can explain their research well, but these are excellent presenters because they are willing to perform for their audience to take them – and me - on an emotional journey.”

The North East Three Minute Thesis regional competition took the best 13 presenters from across the region. All three Sunderland students delivered an eloquent presentation which impressed all five judges – who recognised that the competitors were “some of the best presenters in the North East region”.

Joseph Seyi Sunday’s presentation was so good that it was selected for the online UK semi-final, the National Three Minute Thesis Competition (organised by Vitae). He will be competing against the best presenters from over 100 universities. By mid-August, Joseph will know if he has been placed in the top six to compete in the live UK final - at the national researcher developer conference in Birmingham.

The organiser of the local and regional competition, Dr Mark R. Proctor, said: “The Three Minute Thesis competition is a great opportunity to develop presentation skills; and for researchers to shine as they talk about their research.

"However, it is a huge challenge: it takes a great deal of courage to experiment with performance skills in front of your peers and allow your performance to be judged.

"On behalf of Sunderland, I would like to say how proud we all are of Joseph, Zahra and Chinyere who are highly skilled presenters with a great deal of courage and confidence.”
