UV gel is a widely used nail cosmetic as a longer-lasting alternative to nail varnish and researchers have investigated this formulation for the treatment of fungal nail infections.
A lecture this month by the North East Polymer Association (NEPA): "Borrowing from the cosmetic industry to treat nail diseases, will discuss the formulation components and the product's properties, such as anti-fungal activity.
The lecture takes place at the University of Sunderland, which runs the only science-based Cosmetic Science BSc (Hons) degree programme in the UK, on Friday 17th March, 12-1pm in Dale 007/8, Sciences Complex, City Campus.
The lecture will be presented by Dr Sudax Murdan, a reader in pharmaceutics at the UCL School of Pharmacy.

There are currently 12 full-time students on Sunderland’s three-year Cosmetic Science programme, which began in September 2016, and the undergraduates have met with several industry experts as part of the course.
Dr Dodou, Reader in Pharmaceutics and Course Leader for the Cosmetic Science degree, said: “We designed the first year of this new programme to introduce relevant aspects of chemistry, physiology and dermatology as well as the regulatory marketing and business framework for cosmetics. To keep this exciting and work relevant we’re delighted to be able to bring in industry experts to explain the science and safety aspects of cosmetics, fragrances and much more.”
Those choosing to study Cosmetic Science can expect to gain a career edge in the cosmetics industry – worth £17 billion in the UK along – by gaining expertise in the formulation, manufacture, regulation and quality control of cosmetic, fragrance and personal care products.
