In September 2025, the University’s lease on Clanny House, one of our student accommodation blocks, comes to an end and cannot be renewed.

As a result, and subject to an acceptable cost via the procurement process, the University has decided to refurbish and reopen The Precinct on Chester Road, near the City Campus. This was previously University student accommodation but was closed in 2016.

The Precinct will supplement the existing University-owned and leased stock – Panns Bank and Scotia Quay – on the opposite side of the river to St Peter’s Campus.

The refurbishment of The Precinct is expected to take several months, with a plan to complete this work by no later than September 2024, allowing for some overlap between it opening and Clanny House closing.

The University remains keen to improve both the quantity and quality of accommodation available to our students in the city. As Sunderland continues to regenerate and improve, at the same time as becoming increasingly attractive to investors, the University is exploring new opportunities in partnership with others, including the City Council, to achieve this.
