British political journalist and Daily Mirror associate editor Kevin Maguire, who is also an honorary graduate of the University of Sunderland, was at the Stadium of Light today (Thursday 7 July) – the day Boris Johnson resigned as Prime Minister.

Kevin attended Thursday's graduation celebration as a special guest in support of this new generation of journalists, who are now taking their first steps into careers in print, television, radio and social media.

Kevin, from South Shields, said: “It’s just wonderful to see the COVID generation still get to graduate, and not only seeing their joy, but also the happiness of their parents, grandparents and other family members."

And on such a momentous day in the world of politics, what advice does Kevin have for the University’s journalists of tomorrow?

“You’ve got to learn to juggle a lot and deal with the pressure,” he said.

“Today, I’ve been doing interviews by the river, in the hotel, and writing on the Metro. You’ve just got to be flexible and go for it - and believe in yourself.”
