The Duke of Edinburgh, the longest-serving consort to a monarch in British history, has died aged 99, Buckingham Palace has announced.

Sir David Bell KCB DL, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of the University of Sunderland, has paid tribute:

“As with the country as a whole, we mourn the passing of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh. His was a life of outstanding service through a century of social, political, economic and cultural change.

“On the City campus in Sunderland, it was a memorable day in 1964 when His Royal Highness opened what came to be known as the Edinburgh Building. Although few members of staff remain from that time, The Duke of Edinburgh’s visit will always be remembered as a seminal moment in the University’s history.”
