Professor Mohamed Loutfi received an Honorary Doctorate of Education by the University of Sunderland during the Winter Graduation Ceremonies at the Stadium of Light, for his outstanding commitment to education.

Helping universities operate as responsive global citizens is a passion that defines Professor Mohamed Loutfi’s career in higher education.

An expert in the theory of Systems Thinking - Professor Loutfi has more than 30 years’ experience, particularly in university leadership and management. Those early ideas around Systems Thinking were forged when he completed a PhD at Sunderland in 2000, remaining a close friend to the University ever since.

There’s hardly a part of the world where his influence hasn’t been felt, resulting in numerous academic titles at higher education institutes stretching from Cardiff to China. This is all thanks to projects he has introduced that drive growth and innovation through leadership and collaboration.

This wealth of internationalised responsibilities led to a career high for Professor Loutfi two years ago when he was named President of the British University in Egypt, one of the largest and most prominent private universities in Egypt.

He was also made the Vice-Chancellor’s Special Envoy at Coventry University and prior to this, he held the Pro-Vice-Chancellor post at Cardiff Metropolitan University.

Born in Alexandria, Egypt, Professor Loutfi holds a BSc in Economics and Political Science and an MSc in Information Technology from Alexandria University. He also spent time studying System Dynamics at the University of Bergen in Norway before attaining his PhD in Sunderland.

He has become a leader in international partnerships and cooperation in over 25 different countries, some at governmental level, with projects including enhancing institutional cooperation in learning, teaching and enterprise.

He is a Visiting Professor of Innovation and Globalisation at Eurasia University in China and Visiting Professor at Coventry University.

In addition, Professor Loutfi is the Founder and Vice President of the Board of the Arab European Leadership Network in Higher Education.
