The University of Sunderland’s School of Medicine is strengthening ties with a local NHS trust to explore further research collaboration and support workplace development.
Staff from the University’s Clinical Academic Training Office and South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust came together for an event (10 November) to explore how both organisations can develop clinical careers and research through further collaboration.
The event, led by Professor Scott Wilkes, Head of the University’s School of Medicine, took place at Murray Health at the University’s City Campus and saw a range of speakers share their expertise to develop closer ties between both organisations.
Professor Wilkes said: “This is a landmark event in the story of medicine at the University and the Trust. I’m extremely excited to support the growth of clinical academia for the benefit of both organisations.
“‘Clinical Medicine’ accounts for 35% of the entire research income of UK universities, and it’s time for Sunderland to have a slice of the action. Proof of our success will come with the emergence of significant chief investigator portfolios across both organisations.” Deepali Varma, Director of Research at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, said: "This event marks an exciting step forward in our partnership with the University of Sunderland. “By expanding our collaboration, we’re not only investing in the future of clinical research but also creating stronger pathways for workforce development and academic careers within the NHS. It’s a shared vision that will ultimately benefit our patients and communities.” During the event, speakers discussed a range of themes, including enhancing undergraduate and postgraduate research and its connection to NHS clinicians, supporting NHS workforce development and further integrating academic and clinical training. Speakers at the event included: Guests also got a chance to network with clinicians, educators and academic partners and learnt what support is on offer to supervisors, mentors and early-career academics.
