As Black Cat fans celebrate Sunderland AFC's (SAFC) win at the EFL Championship League play-off final, a University of Sunderland expert has shared how the Premier League promotion could impact the city’s economy.

Dr Derek Watson, Associate Professor in Cultural Management at the University, explores the potential economic benefits the city might see now that SAFC has been promoted to the Premier League.

Dr Watson said: “The passion and excitement are truly electric across the city as SAFC has secured their place in the Premier League.

“Premiership status will spark a flood of increased revenue streams from promotion, broadcasting, increased match, and merchandise fees on an international scale. The team’s success will be a catalyst in enhancing a labyrinth of benefits to our city which is also on the rise, with over £1 billion invested since 2015 and a further £626 million in 2024.

“Sunderland’s Premiership position will result in an influx of visitors and consumer feel-good spending in the city, bolstering retailers, hotels and tourist locations. The promotional prospects have also further fuelled the passion, pride and reputation of the city and its citizens.

“Saturday’s game was most certainly down to the wire but emphasised that the journey is often greater than the destination.”
