Course summary

If you're a qualified counselling practitioner looking to deepen your expertise and develop your practice, this course is designed for you. The MA Advancing Counselling Practice degree helps you build on your existing skills by applying contemporary research and theory to your core counselling model, while also exploring alternative approaches. You can tailor your studies by choosing a specialist route, leading to an exit award in either MA Advancing Counselling Practice (Adult) or MA Advancing Counselling Practice (Children and Young People).

Your learning will take place within the context of today’s evolving mental health landscape. You’ll focus on working with specific client groups and issues through research, reflective study, and case-based learning. Teaching is informed by counselling theory and enriched by contributions from experienced professionals across mental health and psychological therapy.

This is the first course of its kind in the region, offering master’s level progression for practitioners with a Level 6 qualification or equivalent. It aligns with the newly approved SCoPEd framework, supporting your professional development and helping you advance to higher levels of practice.

Completing this MA gives you a competitive edge in the counselling field, particularly if you're considering private practice, advanced registration, or future PhD study. You’ll benefit from teaching by experienced counselling practitioners and expert input from a range of health and psychological professionals, as well as access to broad research expertise within psychology. Whether you’re focused on working with adults or young people, this course helps you progress with confidence in today’s complex and multidisciplinary mental health environment.
