Course summary

The PGCE Early Years Teaching (DL) degree is ideal for those who already work, or want to work, with children aged 0-5. Designed for those looking to specialise or advance their career in early childhood education, it offers flexible online study from anywhere in the world.

In just one year, you'll build the skills and knowledge needed to support young children and families in an international context. Taught by experienced academics, the course equips you with expertise in child development, the early years curriculum, and pedagogy, preparing you for roles in teaching, leadership, and educational management.

Our previous graduates have also used their master’s level credits to gain entry to postgraduate degrees, both at the University and other institutions globally.

Please note, this course doesn’t lead directly to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS) in England.

What you'll study

Core modules

Many of our courses include a range of modules you can choose from. Some of these options may only be available if you’ve already studied specific required modules. If you’re not sure what you need before picking a module, your course leader can help.

PGCE module credits should total 120. If optional modules are available alongside core modules on your course, you should choose an amount that totals 120 credits.

How you'll learn

Studying for the PGCE Early Years Teaching (DL) degree means you can learn from anywhere in the world that has internet access, as learning materials will be e-books, online journal papers, and other online resources. There'll be online discussion forums where you can debate current issues relevant to the module content.

All academic assignments are marked online (with online feedback). Teaching practices are monitored continuously by your Personal Academic Tutor and you'll upload weekly documentation and evidence for feedback. Your progress will be assessed with written assignments and observed teaching.

The course has four modules of applied theory (60 credits at undergraduate level and 60 credits at master's level) which are spread out over the academic year. The four modules of applied theory allow you to examine the context of young children’s learning and development. You'll also explore how to assess development and learning, how to construct a curriculum, and how to lead Early Years provision.

Additionally, and concurrently, you'll undertake two teaching experiences in an early years setting of your choice – either at your own workplace or with an employer who's willing to provide you with a placement and mentor.
