Course summary

The PGCE Education (DL) is an internationally recognised teaching qualification that allows you to study flexibly via distance learning from anywhere in the world. Designed for both primary and secondary educators across all subject areas, the course combines practical teaching strategies with applied theory to support your development as a confident, reflective practitioner.

Delivered by expert academics, this course is ideal for teachers and education professionals working in international settings who are looking to advance their careers. It opens up opportunities for more senior roles in teaching, leadership, and educational management, and the skills you gain are also transferable to areas such as education policy and government.

Two of the modules are research-focused and delivered at master's level, giving you a strong foundation for further postgraduate study. Successful completion provides a direct pathway to Stage 2 of our MA International Education or MA Education course – both offered via distance learning.

Please note, this course doesn’t lead directly to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) in England. However, it can be combined with our Assessment Only Route to QTS for candidates who meet the relevant experience and qualification criteria.

What you'll study

Core modules

Many of our courses include a range of modules you can choose from. Some of these options may only be available if you’ve already studied specific required modules. If you’re not sure what you need before picking a module, your course leader can help.

PGCE module credits should total 120. If optional modules are available alongside core modules on your course, you should choose an amount that totals 120 credits.

How you'll learn

The PGCE Education (DL) degree is split into two semesters and has four core modules. There are two theory and practice of teaching modules. and two master's modules, which include a case study module and an action research module.

We use a wide variety of teaching methods with tasks including required reading, directed activities, and self-assessments.

There are online discussion forums where you'll be invited to debate current issues relevant to the module content and, if you live close to other students on the course, we encourage you to form a study group.

The teaching practice is work-based and conducted entirely in a school that you've secured a placement at, or are currently working at. This is supported by a mentor and University staff.

We assess both the theoretical and practical elements of the course. Assessment is through written assignments, a profile of evidence of teaching standards, and observed teaching.
