We’ve recently added to our portfolio of Hospitality, Events, Aviation and Tourism degrees by introducing BSc Esports Event Management. This is a highly specialised and exciting course that is suitable for students who want to be at the forefront of an industry growing more and more every day.

By incorporating event management, our students will graduate with a thorough understanding of how to plan, produce and run esports events in an industry predicted to have massive growth in the next decade.

What is esports?

The term esports has been abbreviated from “electronic sports” and it refers to competitive electronic gaming, whether that be online over streaming platforms such as Twitch, or games played at physical events and tournaments. Popular games amongst esports competitors include familiar titles such as Fortnite, League of Legends, and Super Smash Bros.

There is huge diversity in the types of esports events held, and this is because it’s heavily dependent on the game played, the tournament structure, and whether it’s an individual’s-based or team-based competition. In recent years, the growth in the esports industry has been substantial with a dramatic increase in both players and spectators, with some events drawing in over a million viewers.

Esports Event Management

Our new BSc Esports Event Management degree looks at what underpins the success of the tournaments and competitions in the esports industry; event management. As one of the few universities in the UK to offer a degree related to esports, we’re excited to be learning and growing with this fast-paced business.

Ultimately, the degree will introduce you to the world of esports and competitive gaming and you’ll develop a good understanding of what makes a successful esports game. You’ll specialise further and delve into the management of esports events, and some of the live-streaming technologies required to host a successful event.

To help underpin this learning, we’ve incorporated practical examples, so you’ll have the opportunity to produce live events as part of the taught curriculum. This experience will be highly important to employers after you’ve completed your degree.

Game on! If you're interested in esports, events management, and entering the working world equipped with skills and knowledge to succeed in one of the world's fastest-growing sectors, esports event management at the University of Sunderland is where you should be studying.
