New for 2023 we’ve launched our BEng Sustainable Design Engineering course. We’ve developed this forward-thinking and exciting degree to ensure that we train the next cohort of engineers across a wide range of engineering activities. Read on to find out more about what this course will cover, and what makes it special.

Engineering is changing

We have seen the impact of digital technologies on the rapidly evolving world of engineering over the last decade. Technology is constantly striving to make our lives easier, and the impact of technology on engineering is no different.

Modern engineering now incorporates a range of manufacturing techniques, whilst also placing an increased focus on sustainable, smart technologies and digital workflows. Engineering companies are now looking for graduates who can work across several different specialisms, using the advancements in technology and automation to change the way we work.

In order to adapt to these changes, we’ve developed course content that reflects a range of engineering systems and concepts. Alongside this, we’ll introduce our students to innovative topics around sustainability, smart factories, and digital technologies that will set them apart in their future careers.

Core first year

Like all of our other undergraduate BEng courses, Sustainable Design Engineering shares a common first year. We feel that this is a great benefit, as it gives our students the chance to study the same core themes and collaborate with classmates all across their cohorts. Topics in the first year include Engineering Mathematics, Digital Design Principles, and Digital Technologies.

All of our students in the School of Engineering are based in the David Goldman Technology Centre, in which we have a number of specialist labs to enhance practical learning. Our students benefit from working and problem-solving within our specialist laboratories, and this gives them good experience of what working within the sector and with the required equipment after they have graduated will be like.

After the core first year, students on BEng Sustainable Design Engineering will delve into a carefully selected range of topics. Students will examine the fundamentals of sustainable engineering, the internal architecture of microprocessors, maintenance strategies, data management, emerging technologies and so much more. Industry links

We’re incredibly fortunate to be situated in the heart of one of the north-east’s most crucial industrial hubs, where our links with industry have given our students incredible opportunities. All of our staff within the School of Engineering have links to this industry, so there will be opportunities to network throughout the course.

The University is also just a stone’s throw from one of Europe’s most productive car plants, Sunderland Nissan, giving our students a prime location to forge their way at the forefront of the sector.
