What is MA Advancing Counselling Practice?

If you are currently a practising counsellor, you can advance your undergraduate training and experience through studying our exciting new MA. Our programme offers evidence based, effective, and professional practice in a modern, mental health landscape to enhance your skills.

You will apply contemporary evidence and theory to develop your core model whilst cultivating a wider understanding of alternative theories and perspectives to your current approach to practise.

Our MA programme also offers specialist routes, meaning upon successful completion of the course, you will have an exit award title of MA Advancing Counselling Practice (Adult) or MA Advancing Counselling Practice (CYP), the latter providing specialist recognition for practitioners working with children and young people.

"The counselling team are really excited to be offering this new programme which gives counselling practitioners in the region the opportunity to advance their practice and professional standing with a masters-level course."

Chris Keech, Programme Leader

Why study at Sunderland?

At the University of Sunderland, we are proud to be offering a masters-level progression for qualified counselling practitioners who hold a level 6 qualification or equivalent, which is a first for the region.

Our teaching is reflective of a contemporary mental health landscape, meaning our students will develop approaches to working with specific clients, patients and more through research and case-focused study. As well as counselling theory, your learning will be influenced by the expertise of mental health professionals from outside the field of counselling, expanding your knowledge.

Furthermore, the School of Psychology was awarded an Athena Swan Bronze in 2021 in recognition of our efforts in supporting and transforming gender equity. We are proud to be a diverse, inclusive and supportive learning community.
