Matthew Longstaff

Hartlepool, UK

BSc (Hons) Computer Science

Studying at the University has given Matthew Longstaff all the skills to become a professional in the software development industry. BSc Computer Science with Placement graduate Matthew is now running a Software Development Agency called Sicarius with three other students.

I heard good things about the computing course at the University of Sunderland and it is close to where I live. I had already started learning about software development and I wanted to enhance this skill while gaining a qualification I could use to enter the industry, so that’s why I chose to come to the University.

The course gave me a good amount of choice as to what I wanted to focus on. The different courses in the computing faculty, the choices with these and the option to spend a year in industry, gave me a great opportunity to learn the skills I thought I would need in my future.

I also found the staff in the faculty very encouraging, they wanted me to do well and that helped me maintain my motivation. They would always be around if I had any course specific questions, even if they were outside of the syllabus.

I would absolutely recommend the University of Sunderland to other students. Moving away from home to get the full experience will help you grow your confidence. Don’t be afraid to get to know your lecturers and get involved with societies/sports in your first year if you can.

Studying at the University of Sunderland has allowed me to grow as a person and given me all the skills to become a professional in the software development industry.”
