Ryan Tanner

Assistant Practitioner at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals

Healthcare Science Associate Level 4 apprentice

Ryan Tanner chose to begin his educational journey at The University of Sunderland despite the distance from his hometown by undertaking the Healthcare Science Associate Level 4 apprenticeship. His goal is to eventually progress to our Biomedical Science Level 6 apprenticeship and become a Biomedical Scientist.

As I am based in Blackpool, the majority of my studies have been remote. However, I have found the online library resources beneficial to professional development and found the facilities useful when I attended campus for a Laboratory practical week.

So far, my studies have been challenging, exciting, and enjoyable. After feeling somewhat stagnant in my job role, I found the opportunity for further study to be an enticing one, and I have not regretted pursuing it. Completing assignments and seeing progress not only as a professional but also as an individual has been a deeply rewarding experience.

The apprenticeship programme has encouraged me to reflect on my practice, assess situations to understand what went well, what could have been improved, and identify any adjustments needed in my professional approach. It has helped enhance my practice by increasing my awareness of both my strengths and areas for improvement, while also deepening my understanding of my role within the Healthcare Science team.

I would advise anyone considering an apprenticeship to fully commit to the course and be mindful of the challenges that come with studying while working. For those, like myself, who may not have completed academic work in a long time, I would encourage them to embrace and push through the initial difficulties.”

The Healthcare Science Associate Level 4 apprenticeship was developed in collaboration with employers to ensure that both the design and delivery meet the specific needs of employers and their teams. The blended learning format allows apprentices the flexibility to study around their working roles by accessing their learning through online delivery, with only three laboratory practical sessions in block learning weeks for required assessments.

Ryan's apprenticeship is fully supported by his employer who really see the benefits an apprenticeship can bring back into the workplace. Ryan's supervisor, Dale Pendleton says "Ryan has shown exactly how to apply a part time apprenticeship while working. He provides outstanding work and support for new projects in his current role. His exemplary behaviour and work ethic is testament to his excellent performance in the programme which then he brings into his working role. Well done Ryan."

Apprenticeships offers a cost-effective alternative to traditional higher education as they are funded through levy/government funding giving learners the opportunity to earn while they learn – tuition free.
