MBChB Medicine

Ella McLaughlin knew from a very early age that she wanted to become a doctor. She chose to study medicine at the University of Sunderland because of the cutting-edge facilities. In the future, Ella hopes to specialise in emergency medicine or obstetrics and gynaecology.

From a very early age I wanted to become a doctor, so embarking on a MBChB Medicine course at the earliest opportunity was an obvious pathway for me. I chose to study at the University of Sunderland because of the brand new, cutting-edge facilities and the early clinical experience. I had also visited the open day at the University and was impressed by the enthusiasm of all the staff.

My favourite part of the course is anatomy and the clinical experiences. We get hands-on experience and the opportunity to use technology that makes our learning so much fun. There is also the chance to, speak to and learn from, real patients, which is amazing.

Due to ill health I had to pause my studies during my first year, but the pastoral support that I have received during this time has been phenomenal. The University has been very productive in the way it’s adapted during the pandemic, the use of online teaching has allowed us to study efficiently. We have also been able to continue with our hand-on learning in small bubbles.

My advice to future students is to relax, the staff are really supportive and will go out of their way to help and explain the concepts you don't understand.

In terms of my future career aims, I hope to specialise in emergency medicine or obstetrics and gynaecology. My experience so far has been amazing."
