Our Disability Support team helps all students reach their full potential. We offer confidential guidance and support for any disability or condition affecting your learning, ensuring you can thrive at university.

How we can help

Everyone’s needs are different, so we’ll work with you to find the right support while you study. Here are some of the ways we can help:

  • Student Support Plans tailored to your needs
  • Reasonable adjustments to teaching and learning
  • Exam accommodations to help you perform at your best
  • Help with Disabled Students' Allowance applications
  • Screening for Specific Learning Differences (e.g. dyslexia)
  • Signposting to extra support within and beyond the university
  • Specialist study skills and strategy support.

Who we can support

If you have (or think you might have) a condition that affects your studies, we’re here for you. We can support students with:

  • Neurodivergent conditions such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, or dyspraxia (we offer specialist support to autistic students during the university transition and throughout their course)
  • Mental health conditions
  • Physical disabilities
  • Long-term health conditions
  • Visual impairments
  • Hearing impairments.

We've partnered with AccessAble(opens in new tab), the UK's leading provider of detailed disabled access information, to create access guides for all rooms and shared spaces at both our Sunderland campuses.

The guides assist you with your journey to and around the University buildings, covering everything from parking facilities and hearing loops, to walking distances and accessible toilets.
