Can’t decide between fashion design and fashion promotion and marketing? You don’t have to. This course gives you skills and crucial understanding in both areas; laying a foundation that is praised by industry experts.
In fashion design you’ll develop concepts, explore materials, design fabrics through to full fashion collections, and understand the manufacturing processes. Gain all the skills needed to construct garments; pattern making, cutting, sewing, fabric printing, and craftsmanship; while discovering new technologies.
The fashion promotion and marketing pathway will make you consider the whole fashion market, analyse future trends, develop brands, learn the marketing mix, understand visual merchandising, create promotional materials, and plan and manage events, including fashion shows. You’ll learn graphic design, styling and photography and will have access to our fashion journalism expertise.
Throughout the course you’ll be nurtured, supported and developed by our expert team. They are on hand to guide you and help choose your preferred pathway. They have many years’ experience working and teaching in fashion, specialising in sustainability, garment construction, design, promotion and marketing.
This year we have moved to a hybrid model of learning, where many of your class materials will be online but will be enhanced with on-campus sessions; meeting you in person is important to us and enables tutors to work more closely with you to aid understanding of your subject.
There will be a mix of materials online, including some lectures and directed exercises, with a series of tasks to do each week. You are going to be taught some really interesting topics this year, including celebrity, creative practice, identity and new technology, as well as Essential Study Skills and Practical Maths, to help you succeed in your chosen undergraduate degree.
There will be lots of opportunities for both face-to-face and online contact, and you will be assigned a personal tutor, as well as having your pathway leader and module leaders for support and guidance. Regular contact between tutors and students will be encouraged via the use of technologies including Canvas, email, Skype and Microsoft Teams.

Teaching is almost entirely practical and studio based, supported by lectures, seminars, tutorials, e-learning and independent study and research. Assessment is all coursework based.
In the foundation year you will study five modules; a module about the foundations of art, design, performance and media production, an essential study skills module, a foundation project module, practical numeracy skills, and an introduction to creative practice module. After completion of this foundation year, you will then move onto the Fashion Design and Promotion honours degree course.
In the first year, you’ll cover the fundamental foundation subjects across both fashion design and fashion promotion. In the second year you'll build on, grow and develop your knowledge and learning in both disciplines through a series of live projects, competitions and the annual second year Fashion Show.
In your final year, you'll specialise in your chosen pathway, developing your own unique Final Major Project. Previously these have included the creation and production of a full fashion line; developing a brand identity and look book; producing a fashion publication; creating and delivering a fashion event.

The Creative Industries: Arts, Design, Performance, Media Production Integrated Foundation Year includes five modules:

Develop creative and valuable skills including pattern cutting and garment making, traditional print-making, digital design, brand collaboration, visual merchandising and how to promote and communicate ideas.
Study the entire fashion process, from research and design development, right through to the finished product, including pattern cutting, garment construction and technical specifications.
Consider the changing ethics and motivations of the consumers of the future and create a campaign which answers the requirements for good design and which sends the right message
Learn about the key issues shaping the development of fashion and the main designers, companies and publications in the industry today.
Combine exciting design and research to work on a live industry-based brief which focuses on producing unique outfits for exhibition as well as promotional materials including video, photography and poster design.
Further develop your digital design skills and explore personal branding concepts to produce a fashion branding portfolio, as well as planning a Fashion Show and fundraiser event, gaining skills in collaboration, negotiation and self-management.
Develop your skills in illustration and visual communication in creative and innovative ways to meet client requirements.
Explore techniques and processes of creative imagery for fashion media, studying past and present stylists, examining historical and aesthetic influences on their work and styling and directing your own photoshoots.
Stretch your creative borders by working within a 'creative collective' across different art and design disciplines, responding to a given theme or competition title to generate original and innovative pieces.
Further develop your professional skills by focusing on commercial design and range planning and developing your personal brand identity, while defining your fashion portfolio.
Undertake a series of tasks which help prepare you for interviews and the world of work, looking at transferable skills such as professionalism, communication, problem solving and research and analytical skills. Attend visits and talks by industry professionals sharing their experience and expertise.
In your final project you get to set your own brief, which will be carefully researched and presented in your Final Proposal. This will provide the framework for your personal project, which you can direct in a number of ways. Past successful final projects have included an ethical childrenswear range for IKEA, an original branding and promotion pack for an urban menswear range and a conceptual collection of mens’ suits inspired by the stages of grief through to acceptance.

The annual fee for this course is £9,250 but you will receive £3,000 cashback in Year 1 of the full undergraduate course.
In addition, you may receive free travel across the Tyne and Wear region and a University of Sunderland StudyPLUS Card loaded with additional offers up to the value of £200, plus a bundle of study skills books worth £80.
If you are a full-time UK student you may be eligible to receive financial support to cover your fee and maintenance loan for the full four years.

Get real life experience by organising your own fashion event in the city in the second year. Working together to liaise with venues, planning music, branding and marketing, booking models and not forgetting creating pieces for the show.
Previous events have included a fashion film premiere, a catwalk show, a dance performance and DJ. The fundraising event, which is part of an event planning module, helps our students raise money for their final year Degree Show.
