Case Study

Luke Nickerson

Manchester, UK

BA (Hons) Photography, Video and Digital Imaging

Luke Nickerson wanted to pursue his interest in photography and chose the University of Sunderland because he was impressed by our facilities. He has achieved his dream job as a club photographer in football, currently for Rangers FC in Glasgow.

I chose the University of Sunderland because the photography facilities were the best out of all the universities I chose to visit. I became interested in photography while studying media at college, and wanted to pursue it as far as I could.

The course covers a huge range of topics, so no matter your previous experience, there is always something new to learn and the opportunity to develop your existing skills. I had a lot of support during my studies but the most important for me was the opportunity to use the equipment supplied, as camera equipment is very expensive and can make it difficult to get started and develop a portfolio. I was able to borrow the University’s equipment and attend football matches and events in my free time, standing me in good stead to get a full-time job in football.

My university experience was challenging but worth all of the hard times because I’m now working in my dream job as a club photographer in football, currently for Rangers FC in Glasgow. I would advise other students to work hard at all of the modules, even if they’re not your favourite ones, because you might change your mind and want to learn those skills again. I would also say, try and focus on what you want to do when you graduate and work towards that goal as three years flies by!

I would 100% recommend the University of Sunderland to other students because it is a huge part of why I have my dream job now.”
