Course summary

The BA (Hons) Primary and SEND Education course prepares you to teach in mainstream primary schools, special schools, or alternative provision, with a strong focus on supporting pupils with SEND. Alongside the core training of our teacher education courses, you'll explore specialist strategies for working with children with autism, learning difficulties, and complex needs.

You’ll study SEND modules and gain hands-on experience through placements in special schools, SEND units, or resourced provisions – supported by a dedicated SEND placement officer. These experiences will help you adapt your teaching to overcome barriers to learning and meet diverse pupil needs.

This SEND degree awards Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), so upon successful completion, you’ll be fully qualified to teach in any state-maintained primary school in England. With strong demand for skilled teachers, most students on this course go on to teach in mainstream schools, special schools, or in alternative provision when they graduate. Some choose to become Special Educational Needs Coordinators (SENCOS), a key role which requires an additional qualification after starting the job.

What you'll study

Many of our courses include a range of modules you can choose from. Some of these options may only be available if you’ve already studied specific required modules. If you’re not sure what you need before picking a module, your course leader can help.

Undergraduate module credits should total 120 credits per academic year. If optional modules are available alongside core modules on your course, you should choose an amount that totals 120 credits.

How you'll learn

This SEND course is taught via lectures, seminars, group work, computer-based learning, and independent learning.

In-school training is an important part of this course. During that time, you'll benefit from practical learning and be supported by school-based trainers, University tutors, and your peers.

Your progress will be assessed with written assignments, posters, presentations, and computer-based assessments (including podcasts and vodcasts). Throughout the degree you'll have one-to-one support from academic staff.
