Senior Lecturer in Physiological Sciences

I am Programme Leader for BSc (Hons) Physiological Sciences and Senior Lecturer in Physiological Sciences. I am currently module leader for cellular pathology & pathophysiology and therapeutics.  My research area is focussed on stem cell biology and childhood cancer research.

Teaching and supervision

I currently teach topics related to physiology including respiratory, gastro-intestinal and reproductive physiology. I also teach cellular pathology and cancer biology on the BSc (Hons) Biomedical Sciences,  BSc (Hons) Physiological Sciences and BSc (Hons) Healthcare Science - Cardiac Physiology programmes.

I am Module leader for cellular pathology and pathophysiology and therapeutics. I also supervise third year undergraduate students for research projects.

Research interests for potential research students

I would welcome enquiries from research students interested in childhood cancer research including:
  • The molecular and cellular analysis of childhood tumours, primarily neuroblastoma
  • Cancer stem cell pathways and disease relapse (clonal evolution)
  • LGR5 and the WNT signalling pathway in childhood cancer
  • Stem cell models and differentiation

Research

My research interests focus on understanding the genes and signalling networks underlying neuroblastoma development, relapse and chemoresistance, particularly the role of stem cell related genes. I am also interested in the use of stem cell models as a tool to study childhood cancer development and progression. Furthermore, I am a co-investigator on a collaborative study with Newcastle University investigating mechanisms of neurotoxicity in primary neural cells lines and Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell (IPSC) derived neurons.
