Senior Lecturer ITT English Education

Prior to working in education, I graduated from university in 2001 with a BA (Hons) in English Literature. In 2002, I went on to complete a Postgraduate Research MLitt in Postcolonial Literature at Newcastle University.

I began my career in education after gaining my Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) from Durham University in 2004. I have worked as a teacher of English across a number of different schools in the north-east of England, teaching students from 11-19 across the ability range. I have worked in a variety of middle and senior leadership roles, including Key Stage 3 Progress Coordinator, Head of Department, Head of Sixth Form and Assistant Headteacher for Quality of Education and staff development.

As Head of Department and Assistant Headteacher, I gained considerable experience of curriculum sequencing, assessment, development of pedagogy and quality assurance. I have also worked as a subject mentor and school ITE lead and as an advisor for curriculum development in a special school. I continue to lead CPD in schools and participate in local authority network events and CPD to stay informed about current practice.

In 2022, I joined Durham University as lead tutor for PGCE English and gained experience of programme leadership, delivery and assessment of Level 4 modules and ITT placement supervision.

I joined the University of Sunderland in 2023 where I work as Senior Lecturer of English Education. I am passionate about helping students to fulfil their full potential and become inspiring and creative teachers of English.
