Academic Tutor in MA Education

I recently joined the University of Sunderland as an Academic Tutor and Thesis Supervisor, where I teach MA Education, and MA Special Educational Needs, Disability and Inclusion in the Faculty of Education and Society.

My personal research interests are based around ADHD and ASD, in particular the development of creative approaches to teaching and learning, and how these can be adopted in the classroom.

Prior to working at the University of Sunderland, I completed a BSc in Sport and Exercise Science, a PGCE in Science (Biology), an MA in Education (focusing on SEMH, ADHD and ASD), and the National Award for Special Educational Needs Coordination (SENCO).

I have worked in a secondary school for the previous seven years, primarily as a Teacher of Mathematics and Science, before moving on to become the Director of Learning.

Research interests for potential research students

When completing my own masters in Special Educational Needs, Disability and Inclusion, my research primarily looked at how we can as teachers better support students within our care, who are diagnosed with ADHD and/or ASD. My research looked at how students and their families are affected by this, and how we can further support teachers when they have a student with additional needs in their care. My areas of interest are:

  • SEMH, with particular emphasis on ADHD and ASD
  • Critical Thinking
  • Parental/Carer Engagement
  • Autism
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
