How does the programme work?
If you don't quite meet the entry requirements for one of our degrees, don't worry – the International Foundation Programme could be the perfect starting point. Delivered on campus through OnCampus Sunderland(opens in new tab), it's designed to help you build the skills and knowledge you need to progress to university study.
When you successfully complete the programme and meet the progression criteria, you’ll be guaranteed a place on a relevant undergraduate or postgraduate degree at the University of Sunderland.
The programme combines academic learning with English language development, so you’ll feel confident and prepared for your degree. You can choose from three pathways, each tailored to your chosen subject area. Across your modules, you'll:
- Strengthen your subject knowledge
- Develop essential study skills
- Improve your English for academic success
- Gain a deeper understanding of British culture.
Programme pathways
OnCampus Sunderland offers three pathway options. The right one for you will depend on your previous academic background, your level of English, and the degree you’d like to progress to. Find out more about each pathway below.

Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) and visa information
As part of the process, you may be asked to complete our pre-CAS questionnaire. Because you’re studying with our partner, this stage will usually be quicker and more straightforward.
Before we can issue your CAS, you’ll still need to provide financial evidence. This means showing proof that you’ve held the required funds for at least 28 consecutive days, in line with UKVI regulations.
It’s also important to check your visa dates:
- If your visa expires more than 28 days before your undergraduate course starts, you’ll need to return to your home country and apply for a new visa
- If your visa expires within 28 days of your course start date, you can remain in the UK and continue your studies.
