Technology Enhanced Learning

Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) is a rapidly evolving field which aims to use technology to support all aspects of the teaching, learning, and assessment process.

This can range from apps and services on your phone or tablet, classrooms enabled with reVIEW and CleverTouch boards, to virtual and augmented reality and simulation-based approaches to teaching and learning.

However you want, or need to teach, from traditional classroom based, to modern HyFlex approaches, CELT have the expertise in supporting you to utilise a wide range of technology. You can identify the team's specialist interests and skills through their staff profiles on our home page or contact us at celt@sunderland.ac.uk.

Apps, tools and services

Digital technology is evolving and changing at an almost unimaginable pace, and new software, web applications, and mobile applications are constantly being released and updated, many of which can be used for the enhancement of teaching and learning.

The learning technologists in the CELT have a passion for technology and keep our fingers on the pulse of the latest development, researching the best available options to complement our core eLearning platforms, Canvas, reVIEW and Mahara.

eAssessment

Electronic assessment, or digital assessment, refers to the broad range of tools which are available to support electronic assessment, feedback and marking. Canvas has assignment and quiz tools built-in, including an integration with Turnitin, but CELT also support other tools to help you manage online and eAssessment, such as SpeedWell and Honorlock.

reVIEW

reVIEW is the University’s lecture capture system, and includes both the software running the system, Panopto, and the hardware, cameras and microphones, installed in lecture rooms and teaching spaces. reVIEW not only helps students when they are unable to attend classes live, but provide a means for all students to review content during their revision which research shows helps to improve attainment and progression.

Mahara (ePortfolio)

Mahara is a system that allows people to build digital portfolios which can be shared with others, inside and outside of the University. It differs from Canvas in philosophy and pedagogy, by giving students a private and secure space to reflect on their learning, and choosing what to share with academics and, potentially, employers and colleagues outside of the institution too.

However, templates can be created by staff and shared with students to give them a starting point, something which is particularly valuable in areas which require a record of evidence and to show continuous professional development, such as nursing and education.

Canvas VLE

Canvas is the University's core and most important eLearning system, our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). Canvas gives students a definitive space to find all of their learning materials and facilitates a comprehensive suite of tools and technologies to support learning, wherever you are, and whenever you need them. It works across all modern devices and platforms, with mobile apps available for staff and students.

All modules and programmes taught at our Sunderland, London, and Hong Kong campuses have a space created in Canvas automatically based on our student records system, SITS, with the Module Leader and students enrolled automatically. Canvas also integrates with other University hosted and external learning tools, including Turnitin for electronic assignment submission, marking and feedback.
