Scott Wilkes, Professor of General Practice and Primary Care is a practising part-time GP and the Primary Care Specialty Group Lead for the National Institute for Health Research Clinical Research Network, North East and North Cumbria and GP R&D Lead for the North of England Commissioning Support Unit. Professor Wilkes has over 20 years experience as an NHS researcher and his work includes the use of new technologies in clinical consultation, infertility, fertility preservation for cancer patients, HPV self-sampling, management of thyroid disease, stroke rehabilitation and peripheral arterial disease diagnosis.
In his professorial lecture, Scott reflected on his experiences leading a regional NIHR research network, chairing a regional NIHR regional funding committee and giving some insights into the research projects that he is involved with. His work focuses on embedding new technology in the clinical consultation and includes the clinical and genetic determinants of the control of hypothyroidism, innovative photoplesythmography for the diagnosis of peripheral vascular disease, robotic rehabilitation of stroke patients and home self-sampling of Human Papilloma Virus for cervical screening.
