First Choice – information for students

Beginning in Year 12 and continuing in Year 13, you can take part in a variety of interactive sessions both in school and on our University campus, developed to help your transition to university. Sessions will focus on what it's like to study at university, help you during the application process, as well as developing essential higher education and employability skills.

Who is First Choice for?

The First Choice scheme has been specifically designed to help students who are interested in continuing their studies after Sixth Form/College and are interested in studying at the University of Sunderland. Therefore to be eligible for the scheme you must:

What are the benefits?

*To be eligible for the tariff points and guaranteed conditional offer students must successfully complete the scheme and make us their firm choice before the UCAS deadline.

*Courses that require an interview are not included in the guaranteed conditional offer.

What courses can the 16 University of Sunderland tariff points be used against?

Your 16 University of Sunderland tariff points can be used against the majority of our courses. However, the following courses are not eligible for the tariff points but do qualify for a guaranteed interview.

  • BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy
  • BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy
  • MPharm Pharmacy
  • MBChB Medicine* 


If you completed the Year 12 compulsory aspects of our First Choice progression scheme during the academic year of 2019/20, your 16 University of Sunderland tariff points can be used against the majority of our courses. However, the following courses are not eligible for the tariff points:

  • MBChB Medicine 
  • BSc (Hons) Adult Nursing Practice
  • BSc (Hons) Mental Health Nursing Practice
  • BSc (Hons) Learning Disability Nursing Practice
  • MPharm Pharmacy
  • BSc (Hons) Paramedic Science and Out of Hospital Care
  • BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy
  • BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy
  • BA (Hons) Primary Education with QTS
  • BSc (Hons) Physics with Mathematics Education with QTS
  • BSc (Hons) Mathematics Education with QTS
  • BA (Hons) Social Work


* Only for students who meet WP criteria (.pdf). All applicants must also take the University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT) during the year in which they apply through UCAS. Scores must be within top 8 deciles of the cohort and situational judgement test (SJT) must be within bands 1-3.

Due to Covid-19, we had to make changes to our regular First Choice Summer School. This year our Summer School will take place as an event on our online platform.
