Destination Uni

Destination Uni is for pupils in Years 7–11 and gives them the opportunity to explore higher education through a range of presentations, workshops and interactive sessions. These activities are designed to support informed choice while providing an insight into university. They promote teamwork, build confidence, and raise aspirations and attainment.

If required, our sessions can be personalised to suit individual school needs. Activities can be tailored to your specific requirements and the sessions can last from 45 minutes to a full day. Each activity is linked to degree subjects and aligned to the National Curriculum, Gatsby Benchmarks, as well as the NERUPI Framework.

Our Destination Uni activities can take place at the University of Sunderland, at your school or even online. Please complete our expression of interest form to find out more.

Destination Uni activities

Destination Uni Days

Who: Year 7-11
Duration: 1-4 hours
Location: On-campus

Destination Uni activities are designed to raise aspirations and attainment, as well as provide students with an insight into higher education. We have a wide range of interactive activities that can be tailored to meet your individual needs and requirements.

Why University?

Who: Year 7-9

Why should you consider a university education? Pupils will gain an insight into higher education and university. This session focuses on higher education, degrees, routes into higher education and the frequently asked questions about university.

Applying to University

Who: Year 11
Duration: 20-50 minutes

How do you apply to university? Pupils will explore the UCAS application process and gain an insight into how to write a personal statement and how to stand out from the crowd.

University Ready?

Who: Year 11

This session focuses on how pupils can prepare themselves for university life. Pupils will explore physical aspects such as attending open days, the administration process and preparing to study. Pupils will learn about the skills they need to succeed at university and learn about other aspects of university life such as social events and societies.

Building Resilience

Who: Year 7-11
Duration: 40-60 minutes
Location: In-person session, live online, or self-delivery by teacher

This session will demonstrate the importance of perseverance and strength through resilience. It will introduce pupils to coping strategies, focus on personal strength and link resilience to academic achievement and aspirations.

Interview Impressions

Who: Year 9-11
Duration: 40-50 minutes
Location: In-person session, live online, or self-delivery by teacher
Activity Resources: Presentation, lesson plan

Pupils will explore the job application process and what type of information may be required. They will investigate how to present their experience through an effective CV, how to best prepare for an interview and explore a range of interview questions and answers.

Future Medics

Who: Year 8-11
Duration: 40-50 minutes

During this session pupils will explore the field of medicine and its history. They will consider the rationale and use of various assessment tools and techniques used by medical professionals. Pupils will gain a unique insight into medicine and allied health professions.

Code Breakers

Who: Year 7-8
Duration: 40-50 minutes

Pupils will gain an insight into the basics of coding that underpins cybersecurity. This session will introduce various coding methods to enable pupils to carry out their own code breaking investigation. Pupils will explore coding and computing related degrees and opportunities available at the University of Sunderland.

Money Matters

Who: Year 10-11
Duration: 30-50 minutes

Why does money matter? This session provides pupils with an introduction to student finance and funding at university, followed by interactive activities to encourage them to consider how they would manage their finances as a university student.

Study Smarter

Who: Year 10-11
Duration: 30-50 minutes

Pupils will learn about the importance of revision to effectively prepare for exams. They will have the opportunity to explore a range of study skills and find out which learning styles suit them. Pupils will also learn revision strategies and top tips to manage exam pressure, both before and during exams.

A Future in Healthcare

Who: Year 10-11
Duration: 60 minutes
Location: In-person session, live online, or self-delivery by teacher

This session introduces pupils to the healthcare courses offered at the University of Sunderland. It will outline the skills you need to work in healthcare and identify where pupils may already be using such skills in their own lives. When delivered live, pupils will have the opportunity to ask a current healthcare student about their experiences of studying at the University.

Informed Choice

Who: Year 9-11

An interactive workshop which focuses on decision making processes and how decisions can be affected by external influences. This activity is ideal for those pupils who are about to choose their GCSE options.

Creative Writer

Who: Year 9
Duration: 60 minutes
Location: In-person session, live online, or self-delivery by teacher
Activity Resources: Presentation, lesson plan, worksheet

This creative writing session will provide pupils with a writer’s toolkit that will allow them to produce a piece of creative writing in a ‘guided fantasy’ session. Pupils will also be invited to give constructive feedback on their peers’ work. The session will offer your pupils the opportunity to explore the courses that are available in higher education, and the careers linked to creative writing.

Global Ethnic Majority (GEM)

Who: Year 10-11

Here at the University of Sunderland, we value and celebrate diversity. Inclusivity is at the heart of everything we do, which is why we have created this session to raise awareness of racism and discrimination within our country, our communities, and our schools. Pupils will participate in discussions, debates and activities which are aimed to be thought-provoking and informative.

Bright Sparks STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths) school sessions

What’s on the Menu?

Who: Year 7-11
Duration: 1 hour
Location: In-person session, live online, or self-delivery by teacher
Activity Resources: Presentation, lesson plan, worksheet

Do you really know what it means to be healthy? This session focuses on the science aspect of STEAM and introduces pupils to the career of a nutritionist. Pupils will learn about nutrition and exercise, and how they contribute to a healthy body. Through exploring how to become a nutritionist, pupils will learn about university and the relating degree courses and careers.

Game Developer

Who: Year 7-11

This session is centred around the technology aspect of STEAM and introduces pupils to the career of a game developer. Pupils will explore the history of their favourite consoles and games and delve deeper into the topic of game design. Through this interactive session, pupils will have the chance to design their very own game. Through exploring how to become a game developer, pupils will learn about higher education and the relating degree courses and careers.

Fold for Take-off!

Who: Year 7-11
Duration: 1 hour

Can you imagine living in a world without trains, planes or cars? This session explores how engineers have solved the problems of humankind through their inventions. The session focuses on the engineering aspect of STEAM and introduces pupils to the career of an engineer. Pupils will explore the history of aviation and put their knowledge to the test to try and solve some of the problems the aviation industry is going to face in the future. Pupils will also have the chance to design, create and test a paper aeroplane.

Become a Journalist

Who: Year 7-11
Duration: 1 hour
Location: In-person session, live online, pre-recorded video, or self-delivery by teacher
Activity Resources: Presentation, lesson plan, worksheet

In this session, students will focus on the arts aspect of STEAM by exploring what journalism is and why it is important. Pupils will explore the history of journalism and how journalists have the power to influence the way society thinks, feels, and views certain situations. Pupils will then step into the shoes of a journalist and create their very own article on a topic of their choice.
