Course summary

The Master of Medical Education (MMedEd) allows those with qualifications up to diploma level (120 credits) to complete training to master’s level.

This course will enable you to complete a substantial research project or comprehensive literature review in a field related to medical education. This gives you the chance to explore the fundamentals of teaching and learning and critically examine a topic of relevance.

You’ll develop your skills and knowledge as a teaching professional, ensuring you’re able to offer a student-centred approach. Learning from experienced academics and clinicians, plus guest speakers, you’ll get real-world insights that you can apply directly to your work.

Most students who study this course will be qualified doctors or dentists seeking to develop their career in medical education, and you’ll find employment opportunities within Higher Education institutions or clinical teaching roles in the public and private sectors.

Full-time intercalating route

The full-time course is designed for those who teach and lead in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. It's suitable for intercalating medical or dental students with a strong interest in medical education practice or careers.

What you'll study

Core modules

In each of the first two terms, you complete two modules, gaining 30 credits per module. The Academic Practice: Independent Project module is delivered throughout the whole year and is assessed at the end of the year when you've gained the knowledge and skills to complete it.

Many of our courses include a range of modules you can choose from. Some of these options may only be available if you’ve already studied specific required modules. If you’re not sure what you need before picking a module, your course leader can help.

Postgraduate module credits should total 180. If optional modules are available alongside core modules on your course, you should choose an amount that totals 180 credits.

How you'll learn

The way the Master of Medical Education is structured means flexible learning options are available to fit around your professional commitments

The course combines online lectures, group seminars, interactive workshops, self-study, and activities via our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). Regular in-person study days provide opportunities for you to network with fellow students and engage in creative and interactive learning activities. One-to-one support is also provided with a named supervisor throughout the year.

In-person writing days and online academic writing sessions help develop your academic writing skills, provide protected time for your assignments, and offer the opportunity for feedback from course and library staff. Online drop-in sessions provide opportunity for you to gain feedback on your work in progress.

In this final research module, you'll be assessed on a journal-ready written paper, a conference-ready poster, and a viva-style presentation.

There'll be multiple chances to engage in formative assessments to gain valuable feedback on your work as you progress through the course.
