Course summary

The Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) Medical Education is designed for those who already hold a Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert) and want to deepen their expertise in medical education. The degree is ideal for health professionals who are involved in training or supervising medical students, resident doctors, or those in dental or veterinary education.

The course will help you gain practical skills to deliver high-quality teaching in today’s busy healthcare environment, where patient care is the priority. Learning from experienced academics and clinicians, plus guest speakers, you’ll get real-world insights that you can apply directly to your work.

You’ll have the opportunity to tailor your studies to areas relevant to your current and future practice, supporting your career development, whether that be as a supervisor, teacher, course organiser, or training programme lead.

Looking to progress further? This PgDip also sets you up to pursue a full master’s degree in medical education.

What you'll study

Modules

You can choose any modules, though we advise 'Research Methodology in Medical Education' if you intend to go on to the final master's stage.

Many of our courses include a range of modules you can choose from. Some of these options may only be available if you’ve already studied specific required modules. If you’re not sure what you need before picking a module, your course leader can help.

How you'll learn

The way the PgDip Medical Education is structured means flexible learning options are available to fit around your professional commitments

The course combines online lectures, group seminars, interactive workshops, self-study, and activities via our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). Regular in-person study days provide opportunities for you to network with fellow students and engage in creative and interactive learning activities.

In-person writing days and online academic writing sessions help develop your academic writing skills, provide protected time for your assignments, and offer the opportunity for feedback from course and library staff. Online drop-in sessions provide the opportunity for you to gain feedback on your work in progress.

You'll be formally assessed using multiple methods including critical reflective and essay writing, an individual presentation, and a portfolio.

There'll be multiple chances to engage in formative assessments to gain valuable feedback on your work as you progress through the course.
