Case Study

Lauren Mosettig

Newcastle-Upon-Tyne

BA (Hons) Spanish and Media (combined subjects)

Lauren Mosettig chose to study at Sunderland as it was one of the few universities that offered the degree she wanted to study. Having explored different modules across her course, she has decided she wants to pursue a career in the TV industry, aiming to be a TV producer or format developer for international TV distribution and production companies.

I wanted to specialise in the subjects I was passionate about and get a job within the media industry, whilst also becoming fluent in a foreign language. I chose Sunderland to study my degree because it was one of the few universities at the time that offered a combined degree, plus I was impressed by the great media facilities, with TV studios, camera equipment and radio studios.

My favourite parts of the course include the year I spent abroad working as a teacher in Spain, and getting the opportunity to be creative in my practical media modules, using the University’s facilities to create my own content.

I have explored my career options while studying by choosing different modules and have decided I want to work in the TV industry. I made the most of Sunderland’s connections and landed a job working in TV production, which I am progressing in. I aim to be a TV producer or format developer, working for international TV distribution and production companies. I also aim to travel and use my language skills as an advantage in my career. The knowledge I have gained at university about TV production, advertising and marketing has allowed me to meet the requirements for jobs in media. My work experience combined with both theoretical and practical skills I have developed at Sunderland has meant I have graduated with not only a degree, but a new confidence and full CV of experience to apply for the jobs I want.

If I was going to give any advice to prospective students looking to study at the University of Sunderland, I would encourage them to take advantage of the facilities provided – hire the equipment and learn how to use it, join Spark Sunderland or write for the student magazine.

My experience has been a whirlwind of tears and joy as it has challenged me to overcome my weak points and opened my eyes to so many career opportunities. I am grateful to have a degree in two subjects I am so passionate about and to start my next journey as a graduate.”
