Case Study

Holly Kneller

London, UK

BA (Hons) Performing Arts

Holly Kneller wanted to explore a new part of the country to continue her studies in performing arts and musical theatre. When she visited a University of Sunderland Open Day, she was blown away by what was on offer and the friendly atmosphere of the department. In 2015 Holly founded Atlas Theatre Company, an arts engagement company designed to make theatre accessible to all. The company is going from strength to strength and recently located to The Fire Station, Sunderland.

Before university I studied Musical Theatre at Guildford School of Acting and Bath Academy of Musical Theatre and was a member of several theatre groups performing at the Frome Memorial Theatre and The Merlin Theatre. I was born in London, had moved to Somerset and wanted to explore a different part of the country to further my craft in an academic setting. I looked to the North East and discovered a university with such a beautiful coastline and just had to pay it a visit! I came to an open day where I met Adelle Hulsmeier, and was completely blown away by what was on offer and the friendly atmosphere of the department. The Performance team cannot do enough for their students; they all want you to achieve your best and push you towards that aim. They are always there to support you and help guide you through your journey in the academic world!

My favourite part of the course was working with the academics and getting to study a wealth of different topics to help enable me to advance myself as a creative. Getting to visit professional venues and see a variety of shows on a regular basis was also a favourite aspect. I also undertook a variety of productions roles, all of which apply to my work now. I got the opportunity to talk to industry professionals and get inspiration from their work.

In 2015 I founded Atlas Theatre Company, an arts engagement company designed to make theatre accessible to all, regardless of experience. As well as working out in the community we have a residence here at the University of Sunderland open to both students and alumni, enabling graduates and current students to work together under one creative aim. Since it started in 2015, Atlas has gone from strength to strength and this year we relocated to The Fire Station in Sunderland. My future aim is always to broaden our reach and get more people engaging with performing arts.

My advice to future students? Everyone is aiming to come out of university with a degree – look for the opportunities that make you stand out from the crowd! The University has lots to offer in a variety of different areas. If you’re interested in performing arts, then Atlas Theatre Company is open to you, and you’ll get the opportunity to do things that aren’t always embedded in the course, as well as work in the community and get the opportunity to network. Building a good network is key!"
