Admission channels

You can submit your students' applications to the University via the following channels:

Through our overseas offices

You can find all the relevant contact information for our regional offices by using the search bar on our international contact page.

Applying online

For undergraduate and postgraduate courses, applications can be made online by taking the following steps:

  • Find your student's chosen course page on our website by using the search bar and clicking the 'Apply now' button at the top. If you're experiencing problems finding a certain course, please email your dedicated International Development Officer or the overseas office you work with.
  • Follow the step by step application guide. Once completed, you'll receive a unique ID number so we can keep you updated with any developments in the application process.
  • Apply using the e:Vision Agent Hub. This is our preferred method for all standard applications to the University at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Through UCAS (undergraduate applications only)

You can apply through UCAS where you'll find detailed online help available. The UCAS institution code for the University of Sunderland is S84.

If you need any additional help with filling out an application, please email international.office@sunderland.ac.uk.

Please ensure you submit the following documents as part of the student's application:

  • Completed and signed application form
  • Copy of degree/qualification certificates
  • Copy of academic transcript (English translation is needed if this isn't available in English)
  • Copy of current passport
  • Copy of current UK visa (if any)
  • Personal statement
  • Two references
  • Work reference (if employed)
  • Copy of English language test score
  • Copy of financial statements to be used as part of Tier 4 application.

The University recognises all internationally accredited qualifications. Each application is considered on its own merits and we give careful consideration to other factors such as work experience and maturity.

To be considered for an undergraduate degree, it's necessary to have the equivalent of a minimum of two UK General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level passes. Students can also apply for advanced entry onto an undergraduate course (for example, level 2 or 3) if they have a qualification equivalent to one or two years of a UK honours degree.

For postgraduate courses, it's necessary to have a degree equivalent to a UK honours degree and in some cases, relevant work experience.

As well as the relevant qualifications, applicants must meet the typical English language minimum requirement.

Conditional offer letter

We'll issue a conditional offer for applicants who've not yet met the University's academic, English language, or any other entry requirements (such as references or financial requirements). The exact details of the conditions will be stated in their offer letter.

Accepting the offer

If an applicant wishes to accept their offer, they or their representative need to contact the University, the overseas office, or UCAS to confirm the acceptance. The offer may be declined if applicants don't contact us within 30 days of receiving it. Applicants must adhere to the deadlines set by UCAS if the application has been made through them. Failure to do this will result in the application being declined by UCAS after their deadline.

Fulfilling conditions and paying the deposit

You must ensure that applicants meet the conditions stated in the offer letter, including the deposit condition. All non-EU applicants will have to pay a non-refundable deposit of £3,500 to receive a Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies (CAS) for visa purposes. This deposit becomes the first part of the tuition fee payment and the remaining fees can be paid in five equal instalments. Read more about fees and payment here.

After all conditions are met and the deposit is paid, you'll need to help the applicant complete the CAS request form before we can process a CAS. All details must be completed correctly and checked to ensure the information is accurate.

We're committed to providing a professional and efficient admission service to our students and representatives. We aim to make decisions on all standard applications (first year of entry of undergraduate and postgraduate courses without the requirement of a portfolio assessment or interview) within two working days. For non-standard applications (direct entry to year 2 or 3 with a portfolio assessment or interview requirement) within five working days.

If a decision hasn't been received from us after the above time, you can contact our overseas office or email our UK admissions team directly.

Deferring

Deferring admission means an applicant wishes to change their intake for the next available intake. Deferrals are only possible for one year and:

  • The request shall be made before the start of the current year, or within two weeks after the start date. For example, if an applicant received an offer to start in September 2020 with a start date of 19 September 2020 and they're unable to join the course on time, they may request to change or defer the offer before 19 September, or within two weeks of that date. If the applicant decides to come later than the above time, a new application form must be submitted.
  • All applicants who defer their course must apply for a new visa. This also applies to applicants who received their visa for the previous intake but were unable to travel and were then required to defer their offers for the next intake.
  • It will be your responsibility to inform the applicant about this policy prior to making any deferral requests.

Refunds

We'll only issue a refund at the specific request of an applicant. The circumstances where the University will consider offering a refund include:

  • If an applicant is unable to obtain a visa to enter the UK after paying their deposit
  • If the University cancels an applicant's chosen course. Claims for refunds in these circumstances must be made within three months of the official start date of the course.

The form or letter requesting a refund must include any evidence in support of the request, e.g. visa refusal letter. In order to comply with our obligations under money laundering legislation, we're unable to make any refunds in cash and they can only be issued to the person who originally made the payment. This means that fees paid by sponsors, parents, or regional offices cannot be refunded personally.

All deposits paid to the University are non-refundable, except where an applicant fails to obtain a visa to enter the UK.
