Sports scholarships and bursaries

We have created these sports scholarships to support eligible undergraduate students to fulfil their potential whilst studying at the University.

We offer a range of generous sports scholarships to support you while you study.

These scholarships require an application that will assess your eligibility – please note applying doesn't guarantee you'll receive it.

Team Sunderland also offer the Elite Athlete Scheme which exists for student athletes performing at an advanced level, providing financial support and opportunities for personal development.

What is it?

We are committed to supporting student athletes who are performing at an advanced level in basketball. We have created these scholarships to support eligible undergraduate students to fulfil their potential whilst studying at the University.

Who can apply?

  • You must be a 'home' or 'overseas island' student studying a full-time undergraduate course
  • You must be starting in year one of your studies in autumn 2024.
  • You must be aged 18 or 19 on 1 September 2024.
  • You must become a member of Team Sunderland as an Elite Athlete.
  • You must have participated in basketball and been selected within the last 18 months to compete at regional, national, or international level.

How much will I get?

This scholarship offers the following generous support package for each year of continuous study:

  • £2,000 cash payment for each year (up to a maximum of three years).
  • Specialist support, including mentoring, sport massage and physiotherapy, gym access, strength and conditioning, nutritional advice, and lifestyle management.

How do I apply?

To apply for this scholarship, please follow our step-by-step guide on our Scholarships and bursaries explained page which asks you to log into your myApplication account and complete our short application form.

As part of the application process you must submit:

  • A statement detailing your most recent achievements in sport (up to 2,000 characters). You must specify the competition, age group, event, and year. Please include any recent inclusion in Excel/National/International or Regional squads.
  • Any video footage of a performance in the last 12 months.
  • A reference from a coach/trainer or National Governing Body of Sport.

When can I apply?

You can apply for this scholarship from March 2024. The deadline for applications is Wednesday 31 July 2024.

How will I be paid?

All cash payments will be made into your UK bank account. It is your responsibility to enter your bank details onto your myApplication account to enable these payments to be made.

If your application is successful you'll receive a cash payment of £2,000 on the fifth working day in February in each year of study, subject to academic progression.

When will I receive my award?

All applications that meet the criteria will be shortlisted for consideration by the Awarding Committee. An award will be made following a checking and verification process. If your application is successful you'll be notified via email of your provisional award in August 2024.

What is it?

We are committed to supporting student athletes who are performing at an advanced level in women's football. We have created these scholarships to support eligible undergraduate students to fulfil their potential whilst studying at the University.

Who can apply?

  • You must be a 'home' or 'overseas island' student studying a full-time undergraduate course
  • You must be starting in year one of your studies in autumn 2024.
  • You must be aged 18 or 19 on 1 September 2024.
  • You must become a member of Team Sunderland as an Elite Athlete.
  • You must have participated in football and been selected within the last 18 months to compete at regional, national, or international level.
  • The scholarship is open to those who identify as a woman and non-binary people playing for a women’s football team.

How much will I get?

This scholarship offers the following generous support package for each year of continuous study:

  • £2,000 cash payment for each year (up to a maximum of three years).
  • Specialist support, including mentoring, sport massage and physiotherapy, gym access, strength and conditioning, nutritional advice, and lifestyle management.

What is it?

We are delighted to partner with Mike Clasper CBE, to create one scholarship at the University for the academic year 2024/25. The scholarship aims to support an eligible undergraduate student to fulfil their athletic potential whilst studying at the University.

Who can apply?

  • You must be a ‘home’ or ‘overseas island’ student studying a full-time undergraduate course
  • You must be starting in year one of your studies in autumn 2024.
  • You must become a member of Team Sunderland as an Elite Athlete.
  • You must have been selected within the last 18 months to compete at regional, national or international level in your chosen sport.

How much will I get?

This scholarship offers the following generous support package for each year of continuous study: 

  • £2,000 cash payment for each year of undergraduate study (up to a maximum of three years).
  • A tuition fee discount of 20%. 
  • A 20% discount on university-managed accommodation.
  • And, specialist support, including mentoring, sport massage and physiotherapy, gym access, strength and conditioning, nutritional advice, and lifestyle management.

How will I be paid?

Funding is paid via the University’s Development Trust and payment will be agreed at the point of award. The tuition fee discount and discounted rent will be automatically applied.

When will I receive my award?

The scholarship will be awarded following an application process. All applications that meet the criteria will be shortlisted for consideration by the Awarding Committee. An award will be made following a checking and verification process.
